Daily update · Oct 19–20, 2026

Richer coredumps, faster opens, and io_uring hardening land in mainline

Structured sparse coredumps, close_range() cleanup flags, XFS/iomap fixes, and reduced sysfs/cgroupfs stalls headline this mainline update.

In brief

This update is dominated by crash-handling and async-I/O reliability: coredump servers can ask for structured, sparse, and selective dumps, and io_uring task work no longer truncates core files or disrupts SMB or pid namespace teardown. On the VFS side, open(2) throughput improves, kernfs lock contention is reduced, and close_range() gains new cleanup modes. Filesystem and block-layer fixes cover XFS, iomap, cachefiles, buffer-cache write errors, and T10 protection-information handling.

Coredumps and crash handling

Structured, sparse, and selective coredumps for user-space servers

When the receiving socket requests it, the kernel can now emit coredumps as versioned records, omit zero-filled holes using sparse range headers, and dump only selected memory types.

Why it matters: Coredump brokers can collect smaller, more useful core files and reconstruct sparse mappings exactly without receiving every zero page.

f82383160f0f3aa5ebec7895757ebc30a372a769e2e71142ac3a5a750ee5

More robust coredump delivery over sockets and pipes

Coredump write helpers refuse negative skips, enlarge the socket send buffer for page-sized writes, and split all writes into page-sized chunks to avoid short-write desynchronization.

Why it matters: Coredumps piped or socketed to user-space handlers are less likely to be truncated or corrupted.

15809d78acf437ceeb9e21cbaf7e6acf00bf

Close coredump races and signal handling gaps

core_pattern is parsed from a snapshot, RCU is held while waking parked threads, shared signals are no longer retargeted to a dying coredump thread, and cgroup v2 freezing now aborts an ongoing dump.

Why it matters: Fixes a core_pattern race that could start an unintended handler, prevents a rare use-after-free crash, and makes coredump behavior predictable under container freezing.

8421a62085ec61d58591aa01c0e659511d4f563d606b93d7

Signals, notifications, and async I/O

Keep io_uring notifications from truncating core dumps or SMB sends

TIF_NOTIFY_SIGNAL could abort coredump writes and cancel in-flight SMB sends; both paths now use a no-notify-signal critical section.

Why it matters: Core dumps complete even with pending io_uring task work, and SMB mounts avoid spurious session teardowns.

a58d647acfdcd0ae35565f5d

Fix pid namespace reaper busy-waiting on notifications

TIF_NOTIFY_SIGNAL could prevent zap_pid_ns_processes() from sleeping, so the reaper now runs in a no-notify-signal section.

Why it matters: Container and pid namespace teardown no longer wastes CPU spinning while waiting for processes to exit.

5c0985dd3c32

Prevent ptrace from changing io_uring worker signal masks

PTRACE_SETSIGMASK is refused for io_uring user workers, and the kernel enforces their restricted signal mask even for in-kernel signal changes.

Why it matters: Tracers can no longer unblock signals on kernel workers, avoiding worker exits or misbehavior.

cabc249e65602586c1ecbc74

Fix io_uring worker exit race on weak-memory systems

A missing memory ordering on the io-wq exit bit could let worker creation task work survive after the workqueue is marked exiting.

Why it matters: Avoids potential hangs or corruption in io_uring applications on ARM and PowerPC systems.

0e5663856b69

Prevent io_uring worker creation during exec and coredump

Exec now cancels io_uring work before de_thread(), and io thread creation is refused once a thread has entered post-coredump state.

Why it matters: Eliminates rare hangs and corrupted thread-group states in multi-threaded io_uring applications that exec or crash.

b42c85c20d841f978881ce6c

Avoid recursive epoll in AIO poll completion

Completing an AIO poll request can signal an eventfd watched by the same epoll instance, which would recursively try to take the poll waitqueue lock again.

Why it matters: Applications mixing AIO, epoll, and eventfd avoid a potential recursive lock failure or deadlock.

398e3fa789aa

Filesystems and block I/O

XFS and iomap I/O reliability

XFS direct I/O reads try to avoid bounce buffers first, iomap writeback error paths no longer double-submit failed ioends, failed direct I/O writes keep their real error, direct I/O alignment is honored for non-4K block sizes, and fiemap errors are no longer overwritten.

Why it matters: Reduces silent data loss and wrong success return codes for direct I/O, and avoids potential XFS filesystem corruption after writeback failures.

df7ed21685d5a9a7b9e8686d3f517370076fa9fd24bcbe694025185cf9530d0104adc2c8

Buffer cache preserves data after write errors

The buffer cache no longer clears BH_Uptodate when a write fails; it uses BH_Write_EIO instead, and jbd2 fast-commit error detection now checks that flag.

Why it matters: Prevents spurious warnings and stale on-disk reads after transient I/O errors, improving filesystem reliability for ext4 and others.

9f08e58149dc336e794c59178ed37e18b915

Cachefiles no longer trusts backing filesystem holes

Cachefiles stops relying on SEEK_DATA and SEEK_HOLE to determine cached data, tracking cache state differently instead.

Why it matters: More reliable and efficient local caching for network filesystems, with fewer false positives and negatives about cached extents.

c990057233d1

fsnotify and mount-option fixes

NFSD emits one fsnotify access event per READ instead of two under GSS integrity or privacy, fsnotify cleanup waits until an inode is truly dead, devtmpfs can be reconfigured after boot, and devpts rejects max=0 instead of treating it as unlimited.

Why it matters: More accurate inotify and fanotify events, correct devtmpfs option reconfiguration, and no accidental unlimited pty limit.

24973c36a6ea669bb5af15d41c7df6fa838a7d1d1a34d29c

Block-layer integrity and parsing fixes

Several fixes prevent 32-bit integer overflows in integrity size calculations, cap atomic write sizes by protection-information buffer constraints, correctly verify protection info for offset bios, and fix GPT partition attribute parsing on big-endian systems.

Why it matters: Safer and more correct block I/O behavior on devices using T10 protection information and atomic write limits.

d952f6acb7ac1418b5633ca99dd2351aef70c7715a942e9d7de79a5ffe3374ea55a6ecb3

Fix ISO 8859-14 Unicode conversion tables

The iso8859-14 NLS tables incorrectly used the same conversion page for two Unicode ranges, causing 29 code points to map to the wrong bytes.

Why it matters: Users converting filenames or text with ISO 8859-14, for example on VFAT filesystems, now get correct character mappings.

8e17b922aff0

VFS, sysfs, and cgroupfs

Reduce kernfs lock contention and stall risk

kernfs_rwsem is removed from dentry revalidation, no longer held during notification delivery or userspace copy in readdir, and open-node structures are allocated outside the open-file mutex.

Why it matters: Cgroup and sysfs users see fewer long stalls, especially under memory pressure or heavy monitoring.

8c2a5e65a9775ad03af1843423985e2b1f31341c65579de5

Fix sysfs and cgroupfs readdir races

Readdir resume state now uses full entry keys and correctly handles entries removed between or during getdents calls.

Why it matters: Directory listings in sysfs and cgroupfs no longer show duplicate or missing entries when files vanish concurrently.

5ebcb578adee45126ed80bb1

Speed up file open by consuming the path-lookup dentry reference

The open path now consumes the dentry reference already held from path lookup instead of dropping and reacquiring it.

Why it matters: Open-heavy workloads such as builds and servers can see up to about 39% higher open(2) throughput.

161ce1e692d0

Pipe resize and splice wake only interested poll waiters

Pipe wakeups from resize and splice now pass the correct EPOLLIN or EPOLLOUT key instead of NULL.

Why it matters: Reduces spurious wakeups and CPU overhead for applications using epoll, poll, or select on pipes.

b76721a82cbe5045900e1bc4

File descriptors and process lifecycle

close_range() gains exception and cloexec-only modes

Two new flags let a process close all file descriptors outside a given range, or close only the close-on-exec descriptors in the range.

Why it matters: Applications can perform targeted fd cleanup before exec without scanning /proc/self/fd or risking races.

6939539684ce06074fbbf092

Close file descriptors synchronously and in safe order

Process exit, close_range(), and close-on-exec now flush and release files immediately instead of deferring to task work, and close descriptors in decreasing order to match the previous deferred-fput order.

Why it matters: Faster process teardown, exec, and bulk fd cleanup, plus fewer deadlocks between interdependent file release callbacks.

c8d9b40eabf0056069eb2b66e07feeeb5b8da01971311830

Restore SIGHUP to foreground process group on session leader exit

The controlling tty is now hung up before the session leader's files are closed, allowing disassociate_ctty() to send SIGHUP to the foreground process group.

Why it matters: Terminal sessions and shell jobs no longer lose the hangup signal when their session leader exits.

ad016f0131eb

Mounts, namespaces, and pidfds

open_tree() flag breaks mount namespace loops

OPEN_TREE_DROP_MNTNS_MOUNTS drops nsfs mounts while cloning a tree, avoiding ELOOP when attaching recursive clones inside younger mount namespaces.

Why it matters: Fixes container runtimes like crun that failed when bind-mounting the host root on systems with pinned mount namespaces such as snapd.

73b40395c71c

Unix sockets can hand out thread-specific pidfds

The new socket options allow Unix socket receivers and peers to get a pidfd for the exact sending or connecting thread rather than just the thread-group leader.

Why it matters: System services such as coredump brokers and IPC supervisors can identify and operate on the specific thread behind a socket message or connection.

be3a5e06b962e10899b2a098

pidfs reports coredump info for the crashing thread

When a thread group coredumps, pidfs now records the coredump on the pidfd of the specific thread that took the fatal signal, not just the leader.

Why it matters: Coredump handlers using SO_PEERPIDFD_THREAD can retrieve coredump metadata and state from the exact crashing thread's pidfd.

3209535cd39e

Security and hardening

Close POSIX mqueue notification resource leak

mqueue notification resources could be orphaned when the registering task exited while another thread group still held the shared file table; they are now released during inode eviction.

Why it matters: Unprivileged users can no longer repeatedly leak kernel objects such as sockets, PIDs, and user namespace references through mq_notify.

eb85469f0dd6

Reject out-of-range values in user namespace ID mappings

Writes to uid_map or gid_map with values above the 32-bit range were silently truncated; the kernel now rejects them with EINVAL.

Why it matters: Prevents surprising and potentially dangerous mappings when configuring user namespaces for containers or sandboxes.

09a71b58a25d

Harden file descriptor tables with counted-by attribute

The fdtable's fd array is annotated with __counted_by_ptr, enabling compiler and runtime hardening checks that validate accesses against max_fds.

Why it matters: Adds another layer of kernel memory-safety hardening against out-of-bounds file descriptor table accesses.
