Linux 7.4 merge window: DRM, io_uring, vhost, PCI, and more land
Eight subsystem pull requests for v7.4 were merged into mainline, spanning DRM, io_uring, vhost/virtio, PCI, IOMMU, device mapper, DMA mapping, and VFIO.
In brief
The 7.4 merge window picked up a broad set of subsystem pull requests. Notable items include amdgpu HDMI 2.1 FRL support, a large io_uring hardening pass, vhost CPR support, and numerous correctness fixes across PCI, IOMMU, and device mapper.
Subsystem updates
DRM: atomic refactoring, panic rework, amdgpu HDMI 2.1 FRL
The DRM pull request includes ongoing atomic refactoring, splits the kernel panic handling code into a core/helpers model, and adds amdgpu support for HDMI 2.1 FRL (Fixed Rate Link) and UAlink over Ethernet.
Why it matters: This is primarily driver/core groundwork; amdgpu gains new display and interconnect capabilities.
io_uring: robustness pass over cancellation and wait paths
The bulk of the io_uring merge is a hardening pass over cancellation, io-wq, timeouts, poll, and wait handling, including a large series by Josef.
Why it matters: The changes target races in io_uring's cancellation and worker/event paths.
vhost/virtio: CPR support and reset race fixes
The vhost/virtio merge adds CPR support for vhost and fixes races that can occur when callbacks fire around device reset.
Why it matters: vhost device paths gain a new feature plus improved reset-time behavior.
PCI: supported link speed reporting on sparc64 and powerpc
PCI enumeration now sets supported_speeds in set_pcie_port_type(), which matters for sparc64 and powerpc paths that call it via of_create_pci_dev() instead of the usual pci_setup_device().
Why it matters: Those platforms should now report PCIe supported speeds more consistently.
IOMMU: scatterlist overflow checks and MSI handling fixes
The IOMMU core gains detection of scatterlist length overflows, finalizes deferred domain attachments before mapping MSI pages, and consolidates x86 MSI reserved-region handling.
Why it matters: These are correctness improvements for scatter/gather mapping and MSI setup on IOMMU-backed systems.
Device mapper: dm-writecache fix and dm-vdo hardening
Fixes a dm_accept_partial_bio bug that broke dm-writecache in persistent-memory mode, uses assign_bit() in cleanup, and fixes dm-vdo misbehavior on invalid metadata.
Why it matters: Persistent-memory dm-writecache users are the target of the main fix, while dm-vdo gets a metadata correctness fix.
DMA mapping: SWIOTLB cleanups and exact page allocation
The dma-mapping merge includes several SWIOTLB initialization cleanups, exact page allocation for DMA pages, and tools/dma build fixes.
Why it matters: The DMA mapping code is cleaned up and DMA page allocation can be more precise.
VFIO: selftest portability fix and documentation
Fixes a missing selftest <libgen.h> include for basename() to support non-glibc builds, and adds selftest documentation covering the libvfio helper library.
Why it matters: VFIO selftests should build on more libc implementations and are now better documented.
