CXL Dynamic Capacity groundwork and a wave of ATA, TPM, and hwmon fixes
Today's mainline kernel highlights include the first CXL Dynamic Capacity Device plumbing, removal of a data-corrupting SATA driver, more robust TPM and I2C handling, and a big set of hardware monitoring and fan control improvements.
In brief
This batch is heavy on CXL plumbing, with the first steps toward Dynamic Capacity Device support, corrected latency and bandwidth math, and a series of enumeration and error-handling fixes. ATA gets a dangerous driver removed plus hotplug and quirk fixes, while TPM and I2C subsystems gain reliability and security improvements. Hardware monitoring sees widespread fixes for coretemp, k10temp, ACPI power meters, and many new fan/EC drivers.
CXL
Initial CXL Dynamic Capacity Device support
This series starts enabling CXL Dynamic Capacity Devices by detecting DCD mailbox commands, reading DC partition configuration, matching CDAT performance metadata, and configuring separate DCD event interrupts.
Why it matters: Lays the groundwork for hot-pluggable CXL memory expansion; DCD regions are not yet usable until follow-up event and DAX region support lands.

Correct CXL memory latency and bandwidth calculations
PCIe link latency was still in picoseconds while CDAT latencies are in nanoseconds, inflating CXL memory latency 1000x; the bandwidth calculation also ignored negotiated link width. QTG _DSM inputs now convert back to picoseconds as the spec requires.
Why it matters: CXL memory performance attributes and memory-tier ordering in sysfs are now accurate, helping users who tune CXL-attached memory.
Fix CXL error handling for corrected errors and endpoint reports
Correctable ECC MCEs no longer offline the aliased page of an Extended Linear Cache region; only uncorrected errors with a usable address do. Endpoint protocol errors reported via CPER are now routed to the correct device instead of being dropped silently.
Why it matters: Less needless loss of usable CXL memory, and endpoint protocol errors now generate proper trace events.
Fix CXL feature mailbox and enumeration bugs
Feature transfers whose offset plus size overflows the 16-bit mailbox field are rejected, and get_supported_features() now sets __counted_by before filling so FORTIFY bounds checking sees the correct size.
Why it matters: Closes a potential out-of-bounds or incorrect-data access through the firmware control interface and fixes a kernel panic when querying supported CXL features.
Robust CXL decoder enumeration
Committed HDM decoders with size zero are accepted instead of failing the whole port; switch decoder targets are parsed as little-endian and bounded by the minimum of interleave ways and nr_targets; DVSEC-emulated decoders skip reset detection.
Why it matters: CXL topology works on big-endian systems, firmware-locked zero-size decoders, and QEMU DVSEC emulation without crashes or spurious reset handling.

Fix CXL sysfs reporting and debugfs lifetime
CXL bandwidth and latency coordinate arrays are zero-initialized before filling, so unset values read as zero instead of stack residue. The per-dport einj_inject debugfs file is also removed when its dport host is released.
Why it matters: No stack garbage in CXL sysfs NUMA attributes and no use-after-free when unbinding CXL ports.
ATA and storage
Prevent ata_generic from binding to non-IDE devices
The generic IDE driver no longer binds to PCI devices that report a non-IDE class. Previously it could attach to a virtio-blk device on QEMU arm64, causing a fatal synchronous external abort when writing to the device control register.
Why it matters: Avoids a kernel crash on ARM64 virtual machines where a virtio-blk disk is misidentified as an IDE controller.
Remove experimental sata_inic162x driver
The Initio 162x SATA driver has been removed because it can corrupt data and has not been fixed since being marked experimental.
Why it matters: Users of this old controller lose driver support but are protected from potential silent data corruption.
Fix parallel-port ATA hotplug and probing
pata_parport now holds a driver reference while handling sysfs hotplug writes, closing a use-after-free with concurrent rmmod. It also passes the correct exclusive end to idr_alloc, so ports beyond parport0 are actually probed.
Why it matters: Parallel-port storage devices attach safely on any parport, and driver unload no longer races with hotplug writes.
Re-enable FIS-based switching on SATA port multipliers after errors
After a failed softreset behind a port multiplier, FBS remained disabled. It is now re-enabled after error handling so the port does not remain stuck in command-based switching.
Why it matters: NAS and external enclosure users keep normal port-multiplier performance after hot-plug or reset errors.
Apply FUA quirks that were shadowed for buggy drives
The ATA quirk table stopped at the first matching entry, so some Intel and Western Digital drives never received the intended NO_FUA quirks. The lookup now allows later FUA-related entries to apply.
Why it matters: Affected SSDs no longer advertise FUA when it is known to be unreliable, avoiding potential data-integrity problems.
Abort invalid ATA pass-through multi-sector commands
ATA pass-through requests using multi-sector PIO opcodes are now rejected when the device has no multi-sector mode configured, instead of being dispatched and causing a kernel warning and zero-byte transfer.
Why it matters: Avoids kernel warnings and broken transfers for SG_IO ATA commands on devices without multi-sector mode enabled.
Ignore libata.force modes the host does not support
Forced PIO and DMA modes are now checked against host capability masks; previously requesting an unsupported mode could cause out-of-bounds timing-table access in some PATA drivers.
Why it matters: Users who use libata.force to work around old drives will not crash the kernel by requesting an unsupported transfer mode.
Revert JMicron 32-bit DMA workaround
The 32-bit DMA quirk for JMicron JMB582/JMB585 was based on a misdiagnosis; the real problem was BIOS-enabled enhanced PCIe atomics on AMD NBIO, which has since been fixed in the PCI layer.
Why it matters: JMicron SATA controllers can use 64-bit DMA again instead of the performance-limiting workaround.
Add driver for Amiga CS-Lab Warp IDE interface
New pata_cswarp driver supports the on-board IDE interface on the CS-Lab Warp Expansion Card for Amiga systems.
Why it matters: Enables Linux to use IDE storage attached to this Amiga expansion card.
I2C and TPM
Fix fTPM timeouts by cycling ready/idle per command
Some TPM implementations, especially firmware TPMs using the CRB interface, require an idle/ready transition for each command instead of once per session. The TPM driver now performs the transition around every transmission.
Why it matters: Systems using firmware TPMs should no longer see TPM command timeouts during boot or cryptographic operations.
Fix TPM 2.0 misdetection on transient bus errors
tpm2_probe() swallowed I2C and SPI transport errors, so a temporary bus failure could make a TPM 2.0 be treated as TPM 1.2 and fail initialization. Transport errors are now propagated.
Why it matters: TPM users on buses with occasional glitches get reliable TPM detection instead of TPM initialization failures.
Reject TPM responses with duplicate PCR banks
A TPM capability response listing the same hash algorithm more than once could overflow the sysfs bank array. Duplicate PCR bank selections are now rejected and the chip is not enabled.
Why it matters: Hardens the kernel against malformed or hostile TPM capability data, preventing potential memory corruption.
Support I2C TPMs with an optional reset line
The TIS I2C TPM driver now requests and deasserts an optional reset control before probing, matching the common TPM device tree binding.
Why it matters: Boards that wire an I2C TPM to a reset line or reset GPIO can now use the TPM instead of failing the first register access.
Fix DesignWare I2C SMBus block read timeouts
The DesignWare driver pre-queued too many read commands when the real SMBus block length was unknown, leaving an outstanding count that prevented completion. It now queues only one read until the device reports the length.
Why it matters: I2C devices using SMBus block reads, such as batteries, EEPROMs, and PMICs, should no longer hang or time out on DesignWare controllers.
Fix kernel stack leak in MediaTek MT7621 I2C driver
When an I2C page_len was shorter than five bytes, the driver copied uninitialized stack data into a hardware register and did an unnecessary read. Both are now guarded.
Why it matters: Closes a potential leak of kernel stack contents to I2C hardware on affected MediaTek platforms.
Use length-aware timeouts on Qualcomm Geni I2C
The Qualcomm Geni I2C driver replaced its fixed one-second timeout with a timeout calculated from message length and bus frequency, plus a safety multiplier and floor.
Why it matters: Short I2C transfers on Qualcomm devices fail faster instead of stalling for a second, while long transfers still get enough time.
Add reverse-address and no-start modes to i.MX I2C
The i.MX I2C driver now supports I2C_M_REV_DIR_ADDR and I2C_M_NOSTART, which are needed for the Realtek RTL8366SE switch SMI protocol.
Why it matters: Enables the Realtek switch on NXP LX2160A and other i.MX systems that previously could not use this I2C protocol.
Fix ACPI I2C adapter reference leak
i2c_acpi_new_device_by_fwnode() acquired a reference to the I2C adapter but never released it, so the adapter could never be freed.
Why it matters: Prevents gradual resource leaks on systems with ACPI-enumerated I2C devices such as touchscreens and sensors.
Hardware monitoring and cooling
Fix coretemp showing 0 C after boot on 32-bit kernels
A refactor dropped the forced first temperature read, and on 32-bit kernels the zero-filled cached temperature did not look stale until jiffies wrapped, so temp%d_input stayed 0 for about 301 seconds after boot.
Why it matters: 32-bit x86 users now get correct CPU package temperature readings immediately after boot instead of zeros.
Stop reporting invalid coretemp readings as real temperatures
coretemp now honors the valid bit in the IA32_THERM_STATUS registers and returns -ENODATA when the CPU indicates the reading is not valid.
Why it matters: Intel users no longer see misleadingly low or bogus CPU package and core temperatures when the hardware has no valid reading.
Fix coretemp sensors for isolated SMT siblings
The coretemp driver no longer counts isolated CPUs as representing a core or package, fixing missing temperature attributes for housekeeping siblings and preventing sensors from being retargeted to isolated CPUs.
Why it matters: Users with isolated SMT threads get correct core and package temperature nodes.
Avoid TjMax MSR reads on coretemp cache hits
coretemp now reads TjMax only when it actually recomputes the temperature, instead of on every sysfs read even when the cached value is still fresh.
Why it matters: Frequent reading of coretemp sensors avoids unnecessary cross-CPU MSR accesses and lock hold time.
Remove invalid k10temp support for Hygon CPUs
k10temp matched Hygon devices but derived SMN nodes using AMD's fixed PCIe slot mapping, which is invalid on Hygon. The match is removed; Hygon-specific monitoring interfaces will come separately.
Why it matters: Prevents Hygon systems from showing bogus temperature readings from a driver that cannot address the correct SMN targets.
Add AMD 1ah/80h temperature support to k10temp
k10temp now supports AMD family 1ah model 80h CPUs, using the same base as other programs and exposing Tctl.
Why it matters: Temperature monitoring works on newer AMD processors from this family.
Fix ACPI power meter absurd 18.45 TW readings
The ACPI power meter driver only treated a 32-bit all-ones value as an error sentinel, but ACPI 2.0 can return a 64-bit sentinel that was then reported as a real reading. Both sentinel widths are now recognized.
Why it matters: Users with ACPI power meters no longer see impossible wattage values and can trust hwmon power readings.
Add Minisforum UM780 XTX EC monitoring and fan control
A new DMI-gated hwmon driver exposes CPU and system fan control temperatures, tachometers, and fan profiles for the Minisforum UM780 XTX embedded controller.
Why it matters: Owners of this mini PC can read sensors and control fans under Linux without proprietary tools.
Extend ASUS EC sensors to ROG STRIX X670E-A and Z490-A
The asus-ec-sensors driver adds the missing DMI entries for the ROG STRIX X670E-A GAMING WIFI and ROG STRIX Z490-A GAMING, reusing known sensor layouts.
Why it matters: Owners of these ASUS boards gain EC temperature and fan-speed monitoring under Linux.
Extend yogafan to Yoga Pro 9 and more Lenovo models
The yogafan driver adds ACPI EC configurations for the Yoga Pro 9 16IMH9, Yoga 14cACN 2021, IdeaPad 3 15ALC6 Ub, and Yoga 740-15IML.
Why it matters: Owners of these Lenovo laptops can monitor fan speeds and control fans under Linux.
Add HONOR FMI-XX laptop fan monitoring driver
A new DMI-restricted hwmon driver reads fan speed from the ACPI GFNS method exposed by HONOR FMI-XX firmware, with no fan control or direct EC access.
Why it matters: HONOR laptop owners can see fan RPM through standard hwmon sysfs interfaces.
Allow Dell SMM fan control on more Dell systems
dell-smm whitelist entries were added for the OptiPlex 7090, Latitude 5420, Precision 3650 Tower, and Dell 16 DC16250, enabling the special SMM calls that toggle BIOS fan control.
Why it matters: Users of fan-control tools on these systems can manually control fans under Linux.
Fix Arctic fan controller PWM cache
The arctic_fan_controller driver now initializes the cached PWM duty to the MCU's factory default 40% instead of 0 at probe and after reset, so a first single-channel write no longer commands 0% on other channels.
Why it matters: Prevents fans from stopping unexpectedly when the driver is loaded or resumes on Arctic fan controllers.
Add NCT6122D/NCT6126D support to nct6775
The nct6775 driver now supports Nuvoton NCT6126D and NCT6122D Super-I/O chips, including an additional voltage input and documented fan limit registers.
Why it matters: Motherboards using these newer Super-I/O chips get hardware monitoring support.
Add ASUS ROG Ryujin III 360 support
The asus_rog_ryujin driver adds the USB product ID for the base ROG Ryujin III 360 AIO cooler and reuses the existing ROG Ryujin III status layout and duty channel.
Why it matters: Owners of this AIO cooler can monitor coolant temperature, pump speed, and fan speed and control the internal fan.
Serialise watchdog, sensor, and PWM register access in hwmon drivers
The ftsteutates, nct7904, and npcm750 hwmon drivers had removed internal locks, but watchdog and thermal cooling-device callbacks are not serialized by the hwmon core, so paged or banked register accesses could interleave.
Why it matters: Prevents spurious watchdog resets and corrupted sensor, fan, or PWM settings on affected server and embedded boards.
Fix Corsair Commander Pro HID lockup risk
The driver now takes its wait-input-report lock with interrupts disabled, making it safe when the HID raw_event callback runs from process, softirq, or hardirq context.
Why it matters: Corsair Commander Pro and similar device users avoid potential deadlocks and lockdep warnings.
LED, USB, and platform fixes
LED trigger core gains hardware-offload reporting
The LED trigger core now lets triggers report whether they are actually offloaded to hardware and exposes a trigger_may_offload_to_hw sysfs attribute, with drivers such as netdev implementing it.
Why it matters: Users can now tell whether an LED trigger is being driven by hardware rather than software, which helps understand and debug LED behavior on laptops and network devices.
Writing LED brightness now exits hardware-control mode
Writing the LED brightness sysfs attribute now removes the active hardware-control trigger, preventing software and hardware LED control from getting out of sync.
Why it matters: Users can manually override hardware-controlled LEDs without being stuck with a confusing write-only brightness attribute.
Add LTC3208 multi-display LED driver
A new I2C driver supports the Analog Devices LTC3208 multi-display LED controller, including its main, sub, auxiliary, camera, and RGB LED channels.
Why it matters: Devices using the LTC3208 can now have their multi-color or multi-zone LED lighting controlled from Linux.
Fix USB disconnect use-after-free during device probing
Driver core now takes the parent lock during deferred and async USB interface probe and keeps a safe reference while iterating devices, closing a race where the parent USB device could be freed.
Why it matters: Avoids rare but serious instability when unplugging USB devices while the kernel is probing or attaching drivers.
Fix Qualcomm WLED backlight and crash bugs
WLED3 brightness writes used an overlapping register stride, the OVP interrupt enabled state could disagree with the software brightness, and driver removal dereferenced a NULL pointer. The driver now reads back the actual programmed brightness at probe.
Why it matters: Qualcomm phones, tablets, and laptops with WLED displays get correct backlight levels and no longer crash on unbind.
Reject short USB reports in Gigabyte Waterforce driver
The gigabyte_waterforce HID driver now validates received report lengths before reading firmware or status fields, preventing out-of-bounds reads from truncated reports.
Why it matters: A malicious USB device or faulty cooler firmware can no longer trigger out-of-bounds memory access in this driver.
Add X-Powers AC200 companion IC driver
New MFD driver for the X-Powers AC200, an I2C mixed-signal companion chip with audio, video, RTC, and Ethernet PHY functions, plus integrated clock and reset management.
Why it matters: Mainline Linux can now bring up Allwinner boards that use the AC200 chip for audio, video, and Ethernet functions.
Add Khadas VIM4 MCU and fan support
The Khadas MCU driver gains a VIM4 variant with its own register configuration, and the fan driver now uses per-variant fan levels and optional regulator control.
Why it matters: Khadas VIM4 single-board computer users get working fan and thermal cooling control under Linux.
Fix front camera on Dell Latitude 5285 and 7275
A BIOS quirk makes the ACPI GEXP device and the I2C4 controller claim the same MMIO region, so the front camera sensor was never registered. The intel-lpss driver now ignores that resource conflict on these DMI-matched models.
Why it matters: The front camera works on these Dell 2-in-1s without forcing acpi_enforce_resources=lax.
Add MAX77705 PMIC support for Galaxy S10 family
The max77705 MFD driver now supports PASS2 revision chips, tested on Galaxy S10, S10+, and S10e, where interrupts, charger, fuel gauge, and haptics work correctly.
Why it matters: Mainline Linux on these Samsung phones can now use the PMIC instead of failing to probe.
Restore power-off support on Rockchip Veyron Chromebooks
The rk808 poweroff handler was registered in the wrong sys-off mode after conversion to managed resources; it now registers in the atomic power-off phase.
Why it matters: RK3288-based Veyron Chromebooks can be shut down completely again.
